10. VIETNAM - 482,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
With all men between 18 and 25 years of age being made to serve at least one and a half years in the military, the Vietnamese Army is only 4.5 times smaller than the world's biggest armed forces.
9. TURKEY - 510,600 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Turkey is second biggest member of NATO and currently has more than 510,000 in its army.
It boasts a total of 90 B61 nuclear bombs in its Incirlik Air Base, but their use requires NATO approval.
8. IRAN - 534,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Reports suggest that Iran has developed suicide drones as part of its military weaponry, which are thought to be 14 times cheaper than a cruise missile.
The Iranian military comes in at number eight with 534,000 active military personnel in service.

7. SOUTH KOREA - 630,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Next in the global superpower stakes is South Korea, who has an army of 630,000.
The constant threat of war between Pyongyang in North Korea and the South’s capital Seoul has kept both nation's armed forces at healthy levels - despite their relatively small populations.
6. PAKISTAN - 630,400 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Pakistan has gone to war with India on three occasions since 1960.
But despite having more than 630,000 active military personnel, it often uses its military might to help out on peace missions across the globe.
5. RUSSIA - 768,500 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Russia’s vast territory is said to be patrolled by more than 765,000 trained troops.
It has more nuclear weapons than any other country in the world.

4. NORTH KOREA - 1,190,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Including reserve personel, almost four out of 10 people in North Korea make up the country’s army.
It remains in a technical state of war with its neighbours in the South due to no peace treaty being signed following the 1950-53 Korean conflict.
3. INDIA - 1,325,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
India has an impressive army of 1.3million.
The developing nation may the lack the conventional firepower of those higher up the list, but it boasts an intimidatingly large reserve army of men and women who could step in if required.
2. USA - 1,431,000 ACTIVE PERSONNEL
Second is the United States, with an active military force of 1.4m.
America has almost double the aircraft carriers than the rest of the world combined, with Washington shelling out £400billion from its defence budget in 2015.

In first place is China, with a whopping 2,333,000 in active military service.
The Asian powerhouse has that number again in its reserve forces, as well as more than 600m men and women of working age who could be called upon to fight.
With thousands of military vehicles and aircraft and more than 600 naval craft including submarines and destroyers, Beijing has a formidable amount of firepower at its disposal, according to the Global Firepower Index.
AND BRITAIN?
Britain, which has had the size of its army cut considerably in recent years, ranks at number 38.
Remarkably, the Global Firepower index says countries including Greece, Myanmar and Sri Lanka have larger armed forces - despite having much lower populations than the UK.
